Dr. Schermuly is an expert in the field of experimental pathophysiology and pulmonary hypertension. He holds an associate professorship in experimental pneumonology and pathophysiology at the Justus-Liebig-University since 2006. The native of Limburg studied Biology at the same institution and received his PhD in biology in 1996.

Co-author of more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Schermuly currently is Principal Investigator on a number of grants of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). He is project leader in the Clinical Research Group on Respiratory Insufficiency“ (since 1996), in the Collaborative Research Center 547 "Cardiopulmonary Vasculature" (since 2000) and in Clinical Research Group on Pulmonary Fibrosis (since 2004). As a faculty member and mentor he is also involved in the International Graduate Program "Signaling Mechanisms in Lung Physiology and Disease"(SMLPD) with projects analyzing "Animal Models of Pulmonary Hypertension". Furthermore, he participates in the project "Local delivery of siRNA targeting the TGF-beta pathway in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis" funded by the German Ministry of Science and Education (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF). He is member of the steering committee in the project PULMOTENSION within the 7th framework program of the European Union (since 2005) and faculty member and platform leader "Techniques and Technology Development" within the Excellence Cluster Cardio-Pulmonary System (ECCPS) of the universities of Giessen and Frankfurt and the Max-Planck-Institute (MPI) for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim (since 2006).

Dr. Schermuly is a member of the American Thoracic Society, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Pneumologie, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Innere Medizin, and the European Respiratory Society. He has won several awards from the European Respiratory Society - he is the first recipient of the newly announced "ERS Pulmonary Hypertension Research Award" in 2006 - as well as a poster award from the German Society for Internal Intensive Medicine and Emergency Medicine (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internistische Intensivmedizin und Notfallmedizin) and the Schunk-Award of the Justus-Liebig-University Medical School in 2006.
