Professor of Biochemistry
Chairman and Head of the Institute of Biochemistry, MBML Faculty, Project leader International Research Training Group “Signalling Mechanisms in Lung Physiology and Disease”
Prof. Preissner is the Chairman and Head of the Institute of Biochemistry, Medical Faculty, at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen since 1998.
Prior to the current appointment, he served as an associate professor and group leader of the Haemostasis Research Unit at Max-Planck-Institute for Physiological and Clinical Research, Bad Nauheim between 1990-1998. His research was directed towards Cellular Communication in Vascular Biology and Medicine with the focus on mechanisms of angiogenesis, inflammation and vessel degeneration. As a member of the clinical research group Blood Coagulation and Thrombosis (1983-1989) of the Max-Planck-Society in Giessen he had already contributed on the understanding of mechanisms in the control of haemostasis and endothelial cell functions. He is involved as a project leader in several extramurally funded programs including the International Graduate Program Signalling Mechanisms in Lung Physiology and Disease or Infections of the Endothelium, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
Prof. Preissner, a native of Neustadt in Holstein, has earned his MS degree in chemistry in 1974 from the University of Cologne, Germany and pursued his doctoral studies at the Institute for Physiological Chemistry at the same institution until 1978, completed with a PhD in biochemistry. He served as a postdoctoral fellow at his home university and continued his scientific career at the Dept. of Immunology, Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, La Jolla, USA, between 1980 and 1982, where he worked on the regulation of cellular complement attack in the field of Molecular Immunology.
Prof. Preissner is a member of the leading national and international biomedical societies of biochemistry, cell biology, matrix-biology, haematology and vascular medicine. He serves on the editorial boards of many scientific journals including Haemostasis, Cell Structure and Function, Biological Chemistry. He has been elected Editor-in-Chief of Thrombosis & Haemostasis in 2003. He is an author, co-author of more than 200 scientific publications.
