Prof. Seeger, a native of Herford, Westfalen, is the Chairman and Director of the Dept. of Internal Medicine II and Vice Chairman of the JLU University Hospital Giessen.
As a nationally and internationally recognized lung expert, he is the directing member of many influential medical associations: He is incoming president of the German Association of Internal Medicine, past president of the German Association of Pneumology and past president of the German Association of Internal Intensive Care Medicine. Since 2000 he is member of the German scientific academy Leopoldina. Since 2003 he is member of the German Science Council (Wissenschaftsrat), an advisory body to the Federal and the state governments, and external member of the Max-Planck Society.

Prof. Seeger earned his medical degree from Justus-Liebig-University School of Medicine in 1979. While completing his clinical residencies in internal medicine, he was continuously involved in lung research. With his appointment as Associate Professor in 1991 he intensified his scientific work as the leader and spokesman of the Clinical research group “Respiratory Insufficiency”. In 1996 he accepted the responsibilities of a full professorship in internal medicine at the JLU School of Medicine and Director of the Department of Internal Medicine II.

Prof. Seeger was instrumental in fostering several integrated research programs in biomedical lung research: He served as spokesman and project leader of the Collaborative Research Group (Sonderforschungsbereich, SFB) 547 Cardiopulmonary Vascular System, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), since 1997; in 2002 he initialized the 5th EU-Framework Project Genetic Disposition to Pulmonary Hypertension; under his guidance the International Graduate Program Molecular Biology and Medicine of the Lung was realized in 2002, which is now training more than 50 young scientists from 12 nations, and the Clinical research group Pathomechanisms and Therapy of Lung Fibrosis was realized in 2004.

Prof. Seeger is a member of the leading national and international societies in the field of pulmonary and critical care medicine. He serves on the editorial boards of many scientific journals including the American Journal of Physiology-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology and American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. He is an author or co-author of more than 500 scientific publications, including journals such as New Engl J Med, Lancet, Ann Intern Med, Nature Med, J Exp Med, J Clin Invest, and he is editor of several medical textbooks.
