In 1994 Prof. Kummer, a native of Frankfurt, Hessen, joined JLU University School of Medicine as a full professor for Anatomy and Cell Biology and accepted the Chairman and Directorship of the Dept. of Anatomy and Cell Biology in 1997. He is overseeing preclinical training of medical and dental medical students in Giessen for the central examination board of medical professions in Hessen, Germany.
Prof. Kummer earned his MD degree summa cum laude from Köln University Medical School in 1985. He pursued his scientific career at the Universities of Heidelberg, where he habilitated in 1990, and Marburg, where he headed the Dept. of Anatomy and Cell Biology from 1993-94. During his education he received several awards to complete international internships at renown institutions of his field: University of Zurich, Switzerland (1987, Fischer-Foundation), Netherlands Institute for Brain Research, Amsterdam (1987, ESF-fellowship), the Centre for Neuroscience, Flinders University of South Australia (1988, Boehringer Mannheim Foundation), and Asthma & Allergy Center of the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, U.S.A. (German-American Cooperation for Lung Research, Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF)- National Institute for Health, USA)
In his research Prof. Kummer has made many contributions to the understanding of the innervation of the cardiovascular and respiratory system, including oxygen sensing mechanisms. He is currently a project leader of the Collaborative Research Group (Sonderforschungsbereich, SFB 547) Cardiopulmonary Vascular System, the Graduate Program Biological Principles in Cardiovascular Medicine and the International Graduate Program Signalling Mechanisms in Lung Physiology and Disease, all funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
For his ambitions and achievements he has received many government and private sector honors and awards, including the Wolfgang-Bargmann-Preis 1993 of the Anatomic Society, the Friedrich-Dost-Preis for outstanding teaching abilities of the Medical Association Giessen, and he has been elected as a member of the German Scientific Academy Leopoldina.
Prof. Kummer has served on the editorial boards of Advances in Anatomy, Embryology and Cell Biology; Anatomical Science International; Cells, Tissues, Organs; Cell and Tissue Research; Histochemistry and Cell Biology. He is the past president (95-97) and member of the Society for Histochemistry (Gesellschaft für Histochemie) and has been selected as the European Representative of the International Society of Autonomic Neuroscience (ISAN) in 2000.
