Dr. Günther is the founding member of the ambulatory care center for lung fibrosis patients in 2001. As an attending in intensive care medicine & pneumology and associate professor of the Dept. of Internal Medicine II he takes care of one of the largest patients groups in Germany suffering from this etiologically diverse illness.
Many influential organizations have recognized the achievements and accomplishments of the 39 year old researcher and clinician, among these the German Pneumologic Society (Young Investigator Award 2000, Award for outstanding scientific achievements 2001), Deutsche Lungenstiftung (Lung Fibrosis Fellowship). The German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)) has awarded him with a Heisenberg-Fellowship to pursue his continuous scientific ambitions.
In 2004 he accepted the responsibility to lead the Clinical research Group Pathomechanisms and therapy of lung fibrosis. Over the period of six years he and his colleagues from 6 different research groups on campus carry on an ambitious joint research project on campus. This interdisciplinary undertaking is funded by the Deutsche Forschungs Gesellschaft (DFG), which is the central public funding organisation promoting research in Germany and comparable to the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the US.
A native of Kassel, Hessen, Dr. Günther joined the JLU-Medical School in 1985 and underwent his entire medical training in Giessen. He engaged in experimental medical research early on. His special focus was directed to the surfactant system of the lung. In 1995 he received his doctoral degree summa cum laude and a dissertation award of his home university. Since then he has been a project leader within the Clinical Research Unit Respiratory Insufficiency the Collaborative Research Group (Sonderforschungsbereich, SFB 547) Cardiopulmonary Vasculature, both funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). In 2001, he was appointed with an associate professorship in internal medicine.
